# Understanding the Improving Diagnosis in Medicine Act of 2024

This bill is about fixing a major problem in American healthcare: doctors and hospitals sometimes get diagnoses wrong, and those mistakes can seriously harm patients. The bill creates a coordinated federal effort to research why these mistakes happen, figure out how to prevent them, and spread solutions across the healthcare system.

Right now, diagnostic errors—when a doctor misses a disease, diagnoses the wrong condition, or takes too long to figure out what's actually wrong—are a significant but often overlooked source of patient harm. A patient might get treated for the wrong illness while their real condition gets worse. Or a diagnosis might be delayed so long that a treatable disease becomes serious. This bill tackles that by funding research centers, training programs, and data initiatives specifically focused on diagnostic safety. It sets aside $30 million for 2025, growing to $45 million annually by 2028, to support researchers studying how diagnostic errors happen and testing new ways to catch and prevent them.

The bill also creates a government-wide council bringing together officials from the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the Veterans Affairs Department, and other agencies to coordinate efforts and develop a national strategy. This council will identify what's blocking progress and recommend policy changes. Additionally, the bill funds a study through the National Academies to examine whether certain groups—like racial minorities, low-income patients, or people in rural areas—experience more diagnostic errors than others, and what can be done about it.

For patients, this means the healthcare system will gradually get better at catching diseases early and getting diagnoses right. For researchers and doctors, it creates new funding and training opportunities focused on diagnostic quality. For the broader healthcare system, it establishes a framework for sharing best practices so that improvements discovered in one hospital or region can be adopted elsewhere.
