# Military Financial Services Protection Act of 2024

This bill creates a new advisory committee within the Department of Defense to oversee and improve financial services available to military members and their families. Think of it as establishing a watchdog group that brings together military leaders, banking regulators, and financial institutions to make sure service members are getting fair deals on banking and credit services.

The committee will include high-level officials from the Pentagon, the military departments (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines), and major financial regulators like the Federal Reserve and the FDIC. It will also include representatives from nonprofit organizations that focus on military banking and credit unions serving service members. This group will meet at least twice a year to review how well military banking programs are working, examine the rules governing these services, and identify problems that military families face when trying to access banking services both on and off military bases.

The committee's main job is to investigate whether banks and credit unions are offering fair terms to service members, whether financial institutions are willing to serve military families, and what obstacles might prevent them from doing so. They'll look at both U.S. laws and foreign laws that affect military members' access to financial services, especially for those stationed overseas. Every year, the committee must report to Congress and the Secretary of Defense with recommendations for improvements. This could lead to changes in how the military contracts with banks or new protections for service members' financial interests.

The committee will exist for five years from when the bill becomes law, giving it time to thoroughly examine military financial services and make meaningful recommendations. While this doesn't directly change any banking rules or create new protections immediately, it establishes an official channel for identifying problems and pushing for reforms in how financial institutions serve the military community.
