While they're working in these public service jobs and have submitted their certification form, their loans go into deferment, meaning they don't have to make payments. Here's an important benefit: any interest that builds up on the loan gets completely canceled—both the interest on the portion being forgiven and any interest that accumulates while the government is reviewing the forgiveness application.

This bill essentially makes it easier and faster for teachers, social workers, government employees, and nonprofit workers to get relief from their student debt by giving them concrete progress toward forgiveness every couple of years rather than making them wait a full decade.
