# What the Veterans Accessibility Advisory Committee Act Actually Does

This bill creates a new advisory committee specifically focused on making sure veterans with disabilities can actually access the services and facilities they need from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Right now, there's no dedicated group tasked with regularly reviewing whether the VA is doing a good job of serving disabled veterans, so this committee would fill that gap.

The committee will have 15 voting members, and the law makes sure it includes people who actually understand the issues from personal experience. Four members will be veterans with disabilities themselves—people with mobility problems, hearing loss, vision loss, or mental health conditions. Another four will be experts in disability law and accessibility standards. Two will be VA employees who work on compliance with federal accessibility laws. The final five will be representatives from veterans organizations that advocate for disabled veterans. The committee will also include four high-level VA officials who attend meetings to stay informed about accessibility concerns.

The committee's main job is to give the VA regular advice on how to improve accessibility across the board. This covers everything from making sure the VA's websites work for people with disabilities, to ensuring VA buildings are physically accessible, to checking that the VA buys technology and equipment that people with disabilities can actually use. The committee will also monitor whether the VA is following all the federal laws that require equal access, including the Americans with Disabilities Act and other accessibility requirements. Every two years, the committee must submit a detailed report to the VA and Congress identifying barriers that disabled veterans face, assessing how well the VA is doing, and recommending improvements. The VA then has to respond to Congress within 90 days and publish these reports publicly so veterans and the public can see what's being recommended and what the VA plans to do about it.

The committee will meet at least twice a year and can form smaller subcommittees to dig deeper into specific issues. Members won't be paid for their work, but they'll get reimbursed for travel expenses. The committee is set to exist for 10 years, after which Congress would need to decide whether to extend it. The bill also includes a minor technical change to VA housing loan fees, adjusting a date from June 9, 2034 to June 23, 2034.

Veterans Accessibility Advisory Committee Act of 2025This bill requires the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to establish the Veterans Advisory Committee on Equal Access to address the accessibility of the VA for individuals with disabilities. Prior to establishing the advisory committee, the VA must take action to abolish or consolidate advisory committees that are currently inactive.The bill also extends certain loan fee rates through June 23, 2034, under the VA's home loan program.
