# Understanding the FIR Act

This bill would eliminate that requirement—once a land management plan is approved, the agencies wouldn't have to restart those consultations even if significant new information about endangered species emerges.

The supporters of this bill argue it will speed up land management decisions and reduce bureaucratic delays. They contend that agencies spend too much time on repeated consultations that slow down forest management activities like logging, grazing, and development. However, environmental groups and wildlife advocates worry this could weaken protections for endangered species. Forest Information Reform Act or the FIR Act This bill specifies that neither the Department of Agriculture nor the Department of the Interior may be required to reinitiate consultation on a land management plan when a species is listed as threatened or endangered, critical habitat is designated, or new information concerning a listed species or critical habitat becomes available.
