# Pennsylvania National Heritage Areas Reauthorization Act

Pennsylvania has five special areas that celebrate the state's industrial and cultural heritage—places like the Rivers of Steel area around Pittsburgh, the coal mining regions of Lackawanna Valley, the historic canal corridors, and the oil fields in the northwest. These heritage areas work to preserve history, support tourism, and help communities remember and learn from their past. This bill simply extends the federal authorization and funding for all five of these areas so they can continue operating.

Here's what's actually happening: These heritage areas were originally set up with expiration dates—basically, Congress said "we'll fund this until 2021 or 2022, then we'll revisit it." Without this bill, that funding would have dried up or the programs would have ended. The bill pushes those expiration dates forward to 2036, giving these areas another 15 years of federal support. For four of the five areas, the bill also removes old caps on how much federal money could be spent annually, replacing them with a clearer authorization of $1 million per year for each area.

In practical terms, this means the organizations running these heritage areas can continue their work preserving historic sites, supporting local museums and cultural events, and helping communities attract visitors interested in industrial history. Towns in these regions that depend on heritage tourism—the visitors who come to see old steel mills, coal mines, canal towpaths, and oil industry sites—will continue to benefit from federal support for maintaining these attractions. Without this reauthorization, local organizations would have faced uncertainty about whether they could keep their programs running, potentially leading to reduced services and fewer resources for preservation efforts.

Pennsylvania National Heritage Areas Reauthorization Act This bill reauthorizes in Pennsylvania through FY2036 <ul> <li>the Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area,</li> <li>the Lackawanna Valley National Heritage Area,</li> <li>the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, </li> <li>the Schuylkill River Valley National Heritage Area, and </li> <li>the Oil Region National Heritage Area.</li> </ul> The bill eliminates the limitation on the total amount that may be appropriated for <ul> <li>the Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area,</li> <li> the Lackawanna Valley National Heritage Area, </li> <li> the Schuylkill River Valley National Heritage Area, and </li> <li>the Oil Region National Heritage Area.</li> </ul>
