# Enhanced Iran Sanctions Act of 2025: What It Does

This bill tightens economic penalties against Iran by targeting anyone involved in selling or transporting Iranian oil, natural gas, and related energy products. The law aims to cut off money flowing to Iran that could fund terrorism, nuclear weapons development, and military programs like missiles and drones.

The core of the bill focuses on foreign companies, banks, and individuals who help Iran export or sell its energy resources. If someone knowingly participates in processing, exporting, or selling Iranian oil, gas, or petrochemical products, they face serious consequences. This includes not just the direct sellers but also subsidiaries, family members of executives, and companies that own significant stakes in sanctioned businesses. The penalties are substantial: the government can freeze any assets these people have in the United States, and foreign nationals can be banned from entering the country with their visas revoked immediately.

The bill creates some practical exceptions so it doesn't cause unnecessary hardship. Humanitarian aid like food and medicine can still reach Iran, and ships carrying sanctioned goods can still receive basic supplies needed for crew safety and vessel maintenance. The President can temporarily waive sanctions for up to 180 days if national security requires it, though Congress must be notified with a detailed explanation. The law also recognizes that companies might unknowingly handle Iranian oil if they relied on false paperwork claiming it came from elsewhere, so they won't automatically face penalties in those situations.

To enforce all this, the bill establishes a working group of State Department, Treasury, and Justice Department officials to coordinate sanctions enforcement and work with allied nations to close loopholes. The government also asks private companies to report anyone they suspect is evading these sanctions or profiting from illegally intercepted Iranian oil.
