# The TRIO Access Act: What It Does

This bill makes a simple but important change to how colleges can use your tax information. Right now, when you fill out the FAFSA (the form to apply for federal financial aid), colleges receive certain tax details from the IRS to figure out how much aid you qualify for. This bill allows colleges to also use that same tax information to help determine if you're eligible for two specific federal support programs: Student Support Services and the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program. These are part of the TRIO program, which helps low-income and first-generation college students succeed academically.

Currently, colleges have to ask students for their tax information all over again if they want to enroll them in these TRIO support programs, even though the college already has that information from the financial aid process. This creates unnecessary paperwork and can prevent eligible students from accessing these helpful services. The bill eliminates this redundancy by allowing colleges to use the tax data they already have on file for FAFSA to also determine TRIO eligibility.

The practical effect is that more students who qualify for Student Support Services or the McNair Program should be able to access them more easily, without having to provide duplicate documentation. For students, this means less hassle and potentially better access to academic support, mentoring, and other services designed to help them graduate. For colleges, it streamlines their administrative process and makes it easier to identify and help students who need these programs most.
