# Understanding the FIRE Act

The FIRE Act (Family Integrity to Reform Elections Act) is designed to stop politicians and candidates from using campaign money to pay their relatives for work. Right now, there's nothing in federal law preventing a candidate from hiring their spouse, adult children, siblings, or other close family members to work for their campaign and paying them from campaign funds. This bill would change that by making it illegal for candidates and sitting federal officials to directly or indirectly compensate immediate family members through their campaign committees.

The bill defines "immediate family members" broadly to include spouses, parents, children, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, and domestic partners—plus the spouses of all these relatives. So a candidate couldn't pay their spouse to manage their campaign office, couldn't hire their adult son as a consultant, and couldn't put their sister on the payroll as a fundraiser. The only exception is for political party committees, which would still be allowed to employ family members.

To enforce this rule, the bill requires campaign committees to publicly report any payments made to family members, even if those payments aren't technically "compensation" for work. This transparency means voters and election watchdogs can see if money is flowing to a candidate's relatives through other arrangements. If someone violates this rule, they face serious consequences: fines of up to 200 percent of the money paid illegally or $100,000 per violation, whichever is greater, plus potential prison time of up to two years. Importantly, if a candidate knew about the violation, the penalty falls on the candidate personally rather than the campaign committee, and the campaign can't reimburse the candidate for paying any fines.

Family Integrity to Reform Elections Act or the FIRE Act This bill prohibits the use of campaign funds to compensate the immediate family member of a candidate or an individual holding federal office. It also requires disclosure of payments made to immediate family members. Specifically, the bill prohibits an authorized committee of a candidate or any other political committee that is established, maintained, or controlled by a candidate or an individual holding federal office from directly or indirectly compensating the immediate family member of the candidate or individual for services provided to or on behalf of the committee. The prohibition does not apply to a political committee of a political party. Next, the bill requires a political committee to report on disbursements to an immediate family member of the candidate or the individual holding federal office. Finally, the bill requires any penalty for a violation of the bill to be imposed on the candidate or the individual holding federal office if the candidate or individual involved knew of the violation. Further, it prohibits the committee involved from reimbursing the candidate or individual for the penalty.
