# Erie Canal Bicentennial Commemorative Coin Act

This bill authorizes the U.S. Treasury to create and sell special commemorative coins celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal. The Treasury would mint three types of coins in 2026: up to 50,000 gold coins worth $5 each, up to 400,000 silver coins worth $1 each, and up to 750,000 half-dollar coins. These aren't regular coins meant for everyday use—they're collector's items made from precious metals and sold at premium prices to people interested in numismatic (coin collecting) memorabilia.

When you buy one of these coins, you'll pay more than its face value. For example, a $5 gold coin would cost you significantly more than $5 because you're also paying for the precious metal content, the cost of minting, and an additional surcharge. The surcharges are substantial: $35 extra per gold coin, $10 per silver coin, and $5 per half-dollar coin. All of this extra money collected from surcharges goes directly to the Erie Canalway Heritage Fund, Inc., which uses it for preserving the historic canal, supporting recreation and tourism along the canal corridor, and funding educational programs about the canal's historical importance.

For most Americans, this bill won't have any direct impact unless you're a coin collector interested in commemorative pieces. The Treasury is required to ensure the entire program costs the government nothing—all expenses are covered by what people pay for the coins. The bill essentially lets the government create a special product that generates funding for canal preservation without spending taxpayer money, while giving collectors a way to own a piece of American history.
