# What the Freedom from Government Competition Act Actually Does

This bill would require the federal government to buy goods and services from private companies instead of having government employees do the work. The basic idea is that private businesses are more efficient and cost-effective than government operations, so agencies like the Department of Defense, the EPA, or the Social Security Administration would need to contract out work to private contractors rather than doing it themselves.

The bill applies a pretty broad rule: unless there's a specific reason to keep work in-house, federal agencies must outsource it to the private sector. There are only a few exceptions. The bill also requires the Office of Management and Budget to study which government activities could be moved to the private sector and report back to Congress every year with a five-year plan for making the switch.

The practical effect would likely mean fewer federal government jobs doing routine work like maintenance, data processing, or administrative tasks, as these functions get shifted to private contractors.
