# Passports for Purple Hearts Act

This bill gives military members who have been awarded the Purple Heart a break on passport fees. Right now, anyone applying for a U.S. passport has to pay a fee—currently around $130 for a passport book and $35 for a passport card. This bill would eliminate those fees for Purple Heart recipients, allowing them to get or renew their passports for free.

The Purple Heart is one of the oldest military decorations in the United States, awarded to service members who are wounded or killed in combat. The bill recognizes this sacrifice by removing a financial barrier that these veterans and active-duty service members might face when they need to travel internationally. Whether someone needs a passport for a vacation, business travel, or any other reason, they wouldn't have to pay the standard government fees.

The change is straightforward and applies to both regular passports and passport cards (the smaller, wallet-sized version). To use this benefit, Purple Heart recipients would presumably need to show proof of their award when applying. This is a relatively small gesture in terms of government spending, but it's intended as a way to honor those who've been wounded in service to the country by removing one small cost from their lives.
