# VA Emergency Transportation Act: What It Means for Veterans

This bill expands what the VA will pay for when veterans need emergency medical care. Right now, the VA reimburses veterans for emergency treatment they receive at non-VA hospitals, but the law is limited to just the medical treatment itself. This bill adds emergency transportation to that coverage—meaning if a veteran needs an ambulance or air ambulance to get to a hospital for emergency care, or to get transferred from a non-VA hospital to a VA facility afterward, the VA will now cover those transportation costs.

Here's a practical example: If a veteran has a heart attack and calls 911, an ambulance takes them to the nearest hospital (which might not be a VA facility). Under current law, the VA covers the emergency room visit and treatment. But if that ambulance ride costs $2,000, the veteran has to pay it themselves. This bill changes that—the VA would now reimburse the veteran for the ambulance cost. The same applies if the veteran is later transferred by ambulance from that hospital to a VA medical center for continued care.

The bill also makes a technical change by broadening the definition of "emergency services" to explicitly include both emergency treatment and emergency transportation, rather than just treatment. This ensures that transportation costs are clearly covered under the same rules and protections that already apply to emergency medical care. For veterans, especially those in rural areas far from VA facilities, this could mean significant financial relief when medical emergencies strike and they need to be transported quickly to get care.

VA Emergency Transportation Act This bill requires the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to reimburse a veteran for the reasonable value of emergency transportation by a non-VA provider (1) to a facility for emergency treatment, or (2) from a non-VA facility where the veteran was treated to a VA or other federal facility for additional care.
