This bill makes permanent and expands pay increases for federal wildland firefighters—the men and women who fight forest fires for the U.S. Forest Service and Department of the Interior. Currently, these firefighters have been receiving temporary salary boosts that are set to expire. This bill locks in those raises and adds new benefits to make the job more financially stable and attractive.

The main change is a permanent pay raise built into the base salary for wildland firefighters at all levels. Lower-level firefighters get the biggest boost—those at the entry level (GS-1) get a 42 percent raise, while more senior firefighters get smaller increases, with the highest-level positions (GS-15) receiving a 1.5 percent raise. These aren't bonuses that disappear—they become part of the official base pay, which means they count toward retirement benefits, health insurance calculations, and other benefits that depend on salary. The bill also covers supervisors and administrators who came up through the firefighting ranks, ensuring they keep the pay advantages they earned.

Beyond base pay, the bill adds a new "incident response premium pay" system. When firefighters are deployed away from their home station to fight major wildfires, prescribed burns, or pre-positioned for high-risk fire conditions, they receive an additional daily payment of 450 percent of their hourly rate—essentially a significant bonus for each day they're actively deployed on a fire incident. However, this premium pay is capped at $9,000 per calendar year and doesn't count toward retirement or overtime calculations, keeping it separate from regular compensation. The bill also guarantees paid rest and recuperation leave after firefighters complete major deployments, with the Forest Service and Interior Department working together to set policies that prevent burnout by limiting deployment lengths and work hours.

For wildland firefighters, this means more reliable income, better retirement security, and official recognition of the demanding nature of their work. For taxpayers and the government, it represents an investment in retaining experienced firefighters and attracting new recruits to a dangerous, physically demanding job that's become increasingly critical as wildfire seasons grow longer and more intense.
