# The Save Our Shipyards Act of 2025: What It Actually Does

The federal government is creating a new commission to study America's maritime industry and figure out how to strengthen it. The commission itself will have 22 members total—15 voting members and 7 non-voting observers. The President, Senate leadership, and House leadership will each appoint some members, and the non-voting observers will come from military branches, the Coast Guard, and maritime training institutions. These members will be experts in shipping, trade, and maritime policy. The commission will have access to government data and can hire staff to help with their work. Once they complete their investigation and submit their report to Congress, the commission will shut down 30 days later.

This bill doesn't change any laws or immediately affect shipping companies or workers—it's purely a research and recommendation effort. However, the commission's findings could lead to future legislation that changes taxes, regulations, or government support for the maritime industry.
