The FEHB Protection Act of 2025 is designed to crack down on fraud and ineligibility in the federal employee health insurance program that covers millions of government workers and their families. Right now, some people who aren't actually eligible to be enrolled in these plans are getting coverage anyway, and the government wants to fix that problem.

Here's what the bill does: First, it requires the Office of Personnel Management to create a system within one year to verify that when someone adds a family member to their health plan, that family member actually qualifies (for example, they're actually married or the child is actually theirs). Second, it orders a comprehensive three-year audit starting in 2026 to check all family members currently covered under these plans and remove anyone who shouldn't be there. Third, it sets up a process to identify and remove ineligible people from the system going forward.

To make this happen, the bill provides significant funding. It allocates $80 million in 2026 specifically for conducting the audit, plus ongoing funding starting at about $37 million in 2026 and growing to about $57-60 million annually by 2033 to maintain better enrollment and eligibility systems. It also gives the Office of Personnel Management's Inspector General additional funding to oversee these activities. Essentially, the government is investing substantial resources to ensure that only eligible federal employees and their actual family members receive these health benefits.
