Right now, when cities and states want to build or renovate professional sports stadiums, they often use something called tax-exempt bonds to raise money. These are special bonds where the people who buy them don't have to pay federal income tax on the interest they earn. This makes the bonds cheaper and easier to sell, which saves money for the stadium project—but it also means the federal government loses tax revenue. This bill would eliminate that tax break for professional stadiums.

Here's what that means in practical terms: If a city wants to build a new football, baseball, basketball, or hockey stadium, they would no longer be able to use tax-exempt bonds to finance it. Instead, they'd have to use regular bonds, which cost more because investors have to pay taxes on the interest. This would make stadium projects more expensive for cities and states, potentially forcing them to either spend more taxpayer money, ask team owners to contribute more, or scale back their plans. The bill applies to any stadium or arena used for professional sports at least five days a year, and it kicks in for any bonds issued after the law passes.

The supporters of this bill argue that wealthy sports team owners shouldn't get a government subsidy through the tax code—essentially, regular taxpayers across the country are currently helping to fund stadiums in other cities. Critics might counter that this could discourage stadium development and renovation projects that communities want.
