# Freedom from Unfair Gun Taxes Act of 2025

This bill would prevent states and local governments from charging special taxes on guns, ammunition, and gun parts when they're bought or sold. Right now, some states like Washington and California have enacted excise taxes on firearms and ammunition—essentially adding an extra tax on top of the regular sales tax. This bill would make those taxes illegal and stop any state or city from creating similar taxes in the future.

The practical effect is that gun manufacturers and dealers in states with these taxes would no longer have to collect or pay them. For consumers, this could mean lower prices on firearms and ammunition in states that currently have these special taxes, since businesses wouldn't be passing along the tax cost. However, in states without these taxes already, nothing would change. The bill specifically targets taxes that affect interstate commerce, meaning it applies to guns and ammunition that cross state lines or are part of national sales.

There's one important exception built into the bill: it doesn't touch the Pittman-Robertson Act, which is a federal tax on hunting equipment that's been around since 1937. That tax generates money for wildlife conservation and hunting programs, so it would continue unchanged. Supporters of this bill argue that special state taxes on guns are unfair burdens on manufacturers and gun owners, while opponents might argue that states should have the right to tax products within their borders and that these taxes help fund public safety programs.
