Sometimes these machines flag something suspicious—maybe a large metal object, something unclear on the scan, or an item that needs a closer look. When that happens, the TSA currently has the right to do a physical inspection, which might mean opening your bag, patting you down, or examining items more closely. This bill would change that process by giving passengers a chance to get a second screening before any physical inspection happens.

Here's what would actually change: If the initial X-ray or scanner detects something concerning, instead of immediately moving to a physical pat-down or bag search, the TSA would have to offer you the option of going through another round of scanning first. This could mean running your bag through the X-ray machine again, using a different type of scanner, or having the TSA re-examine the suspicious item with their equipment rather than by hand. Only if that second screening also raises concerns would they proceed to a physical inspection. The goal is to give passengers a less invasive option before things escalate to a hands-on search.

This mainly affects air travelers who get flagged during security screening. For most people, it won't change anything—they'll pass through security normally. But for those unlucky few whose bags or bodies trigger an alert, this bill would give them a chance to resolve the issue without immediately submitting to a physical search. It's essentially adding an extra step to the security process that could be less uncomfortable or embarrassing for passengers while still maintaining airport safety.
