# What This Bill Does

This bill makes changes to how the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) organizes and recognizes its foot care doctors. Right now, podiatrists—doctors who specialize in treating feet and ankles—work in VA hospitals and clinics, but their official role and position in the VA's organizational structure isn't clearly defined in federal law. This bill fixes that by giving podiatrists a more formal, recognized position within the VA system.

Specifically, the bill creates a new leadership position called the "Podiatric Medical Director" who would oversee all podiatric services across the VA and report directly to the Under Secretary for Health (the top medical official at the VA). It also clarifies that podiatrists should be included in the same pay and benefits structure as other VA doctors, like physicians and surgeons. Think of it as officially saying "podiatrists are important medical professionals in the VA, and we're going to treat them that way in our organizational chart and pay scales."

For veterans, this matters because it ensures that foot care services are properly managed and staffed at VA facilities.  <p>This bill generally aligns the position of podiatrists with that of physicians for pay and grade purposes within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). Additionally, the bill replaces the Director of Podiatric Service position with a Podiatric Medical Director to be responsible for the operation of the podiatric service at the VHA. Such director must be a qualified doctor of podiatric medicine.</p>
