# Youth Suicide Prevention Research Act

This bill expands what the federal government studies about why young people attempt or commit suicide. Specifically, it adds two new research areas to an existing suicide prevention research program: adverse childhood experiences and toxic stress in children.

Right now, the National Science Foundation funds research on various factors related to suicide, but this bill says they should also investigate how traumatic childhood events and chronic stress affect young people's mental health and suicide risk. Adverse childhood experiences include things like abuse, neglect, witnessing violence, or losing a parent. Toxic stress refers to prolonged exposure to difficult situations like poverty, discrimination, or family instability that can harm a child's developing brain and emotional health.

The practical impact is that researchers will have clearer direction and potentially more resources to study these specific risk factors in young people. This could lead to better understanding of why some kids are at higher risk and what interventions might help.
