# School Resource Officer Training Act of 2023

This bill directs the federal government to create and share training guidelines for school resource officers—the police officers who work in schools. Right now, there's no national standard for how these officers should be trained for their specific role in schools, so this bill aims to fix that by having the Attorney General and Secretary of Education work together to develop best practices that schools and police departments can follow.

To create these guidelines, the bill requires federal officials to talk with a wide range of people who actually work in schools and law enforcement. This includes school principals and administrators, local police departments, the school resource officers themselves, school safety experts, and state education agencies. The goal is to gather real-world knowledge from people on the ground about what training actually works. Within one year of the bill passing, these officials need to develop recommendations that cover occupation-specific training for school resource officers, including how to respond to active shooter situations and other security threats.

Once the guidelines are created, they'll be published on the Department of Justice website so any school district or police department can access them for free. Schools and police departments aren't required to follow these guidelines, but they'll have a clear resource showing what experts recommend. The bill also requires the Attorney General to report back to Congress within a year explaining what best practices were developed. Essentially, this is about creating a roadmap for how school resource officers should be trained so they're better prepared for the unique challenges of working in schools.
