# Understanding the Lethal Means Safety Training Act

This bill requires the Department of Veterans Affairs to create and maintain training that teaches people how to recognize when veterans are at risk of suicide and how to help prevent it. The training focuses specifically on "lethal means safety"—which means teaching people to identify and reduce access to methods that could be used for suicide, like firearms. The VA must update this training at least once a year to make sure it reflects the latest research and best practices, and they have to publish yearly reports showing how many people completed the training.

The bill requires specific groups of people to take this training. This includes VA employees who work directly with veterans, people who examine veterans' disability claims, staff at Veterans Centers, and employees at private healthcare providers that contract with the VA to serve veterans. Family members who receive support from the VA to care for a veteran also have to complete the training. Everyone in these categories must take the training within 90 days of starting their role, and then repeat it every year. The idea is that when more people who interact with veterans understand suicide warning signs and safety measures, they can potentially intervene and save lives.

The training will be developed with input from suicide prevention experts, mental health professionals, veterans organizations, and even firearms dealers and instructors. This mix of perspectives is meant to make the training practical and culturally sensitive. The VA will make the training available to the public online, so anyone—not just VA employees—can access it if they want to learn about lethal means safety and suicide prevention for veterans.

Lethal Means Safety Training Act This bill requires the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to update its Lethal Means Safety and Suicide Prevention training course at least once a year to ensure it is culturally appropriate and uses best practices identified by subject matter experts (e.g., veterans service organizations). The bill requires certain VA employees and care providers to take the most recently updated version of the training course within 90 days after the person is hired, agrees to furnish care, or receives support and at least annually thereafter. Specifically, the bill requires the following categories of VA employees or care providers to take the training course: <ul> <li>employees of the Veterans Health Administration or Veterans Benefits Administration who regularly interact with veterans,</li> <li>compensation and pension examiners,</li> <li>employees of Veterans Centers or vocational rehabilitation facilities,</li> <li>employees of Veterans Community Care Providers who provide care to veterans, and</li> <li>family caregivers receiving support under the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers.</li> </ul> The VA must publish the training course on a publicly available VA website. Additionally, the VA must publish a report on its website that includes the percentage of individuals in each category who have completed such training.
