# Rural Area Opioid Prevention Pilot Program Act

Additionally, rural areas that set up prescription drug monitoring systems—databases that track who's getting pain medications and other controlled substances—can receive bonus funding of up to 5 percent extra for two years. This incentivizes rural areas to create better systems for tracking prescription drug abuse, which helps prevent people from doctor-shopping to get multiple prescriptions.

Essentially, this bill recognizes that rural communities face the opioid crisis just as severely as cities do, but often lack the funding and resources to respond effectively. Rural Area Opioid Prevention Pilot Program Act This bill expands the allowable uses of grant funds under the Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Grant Program administered by the Department of Justice. Specifically, the bill allows grants to be used for pilot programs for rural areas to implement community response programs that focus on alternatives to incarceration and reducing opioid overdose deaths. The bill also requires at least 10% of grants under the program to be awarded to rural areas.
