# Home Office Deduction Act of 2021

This bill would let employees deduct certain work-related expenses directly from their taxes without having to itemize deductions. Normally, if you work for someone else (as opposed to being self-employed), you can't deduct expenses like home office supplies, professional development, or work uniforms unless you itemize all your deductions on your tax return. This bill would change that temporarily, allowing employees to subtract these qualifying business expenses from their income before calculating what they owe in taxes.

The key benefit is flexibility. Right now, most employees use the standard deduction because itemizing isn't worth the hassle. This bill would let you get the tax break for work expenses even if you take the standard deduction. The expenses would need to be legitimate work costs incurred between March 13, 2020 and December 31, 2021—basically covering the pandemic period when many people worked from home or faced unexpected job-related costs.

However, there's an income limit built in. If you earn more than $200,000 per year (or $400,000 if you're married filing jointly), your deduction starts getting reduced. Once you earn $250,000 ($500,000 for joint filers), the deduction phases out completely. This means the benefit is primarily aimed at middle and lower-income workers rather than high earners. The bill is temporary, so this deduction would only apply to those specific years, not permanently.
