This bill makes it much more expensive and risky for oil companies to pollute our oceans. For the most serious violations—like when someone knowingly hides information about a spill or acts recklessly—prison sentences would double from a maximum of 15 years to 30 years, and fines would jump from $1 million to $2 million. The bill also changes how civil penalties (money companies have to pay) work by setting minimum amounts instead of just maximum amounts, meaning companies can't get away with tiny settlements.
