# Understanding the Biodiesel Tax Credit Extension Act of 2025

This bill extends tax credits that help make biodiesel fuel cheaper to produce and use. Right now, these credits are set to expire at the end of 2024, and this bill pushes that expiration date forward to the end of 2026, giving the biodiesel industry two more years of tax breaks.

Here's what that means in practical terms: biodiesel is a renewable fuel made from things like vegetable oil and animal fat that can be blended with regular diesel fuel. Producers of biodiesel currently get tax credits—essentially money back from the government—for every gallon they make or blend into fuel. Farmers and trucking companies that use biodiesel blends also get credits. Without this extension, those incentives would disappear, likely making biodiesel more expensive and less competitive compared to regular petroleum diesel. By extending these credits, the bill keeps biodiesel affordable and encourages continued investment in this renewable fuel industry, which is particularly important in agricultural states.

The bill also includes an important rule to prevent double-dipping: if a biodiesel producer or user already gets a credit under a newer clean fuel program (called section 45Z), they can't also claim the older biodiesel credits. This prevents companies from getting paid twice for the same fuel. The bill applies the same logic to alcohol-based biofuels, extending those credits through 2026 as well while preventing overlapping benefits. All of these changes take effect for fuel sold or used after December 31, 2024, meaning the extended credits would be available starting in 2025.
