# Rural Broadband Modernization Act: What It Means for You

If you live in a rural area without reliable internet, this bill is designed to help bring fast broadband service to your community. The Rural Broadband Modernization Act would provide money—through grants, loans, and loan guarantees—to help build or improve broadband infrastructure in areas that currently lack it. The goal is to ensure that rural households and businesses can access high-speed internet comparable to what's available in cities.

Here's what matters in practical terms: The bill sets a minimum speed standard of 100 megabits per second (Mbps) for downloads and 20 Mbps for uploads—speeds that allow you to work from home, stream video, attend online classes, and run a business without constant frustration. The government would prioritize funding for the most underserved areas first, meaning communities with no broadband service at all would get help before areas that already have some internet access. Local governments, nonprofits, cooperatives, and private companies could all apply for this funding, so there's flexibility in who can bring service to your area.

The bill would make $500 million per year available from 2026 through 2030 for these projects. Grants could cover up to 75 percent of project costs in most cases, though areas with very low population density (fewer than 7 households per square mile) could potentially get 100 percent grant funding. Recipients would have five years to complete their broadband buildout after receiving approval. The bill also includes technical assistance funding to help smaller organizations understand how to apply and manage these projects, recognizing that many rural communities lack the expertise to navigate federal programs on their own.

One important catch: this funding would only be available until September 30, 2030, so communities would need to apply and get projects underway within that window. Additionally, the bill prioritizes areas where at least 90 percent of households currently lack adequate broadband, ensuring that the most desperate situations get addressed first rather than spreading resources too thin across partially served areas.
