# Truth in Tariffs Act: What You Need to Know

This bill requires businesses to show customers exactly how much of a product's price comes from tariffs. When you buy something in a store or online, the seller would have to clearly display a "tariff surcharge" — basically breaking out the tariff portion separately so you can see how much the government's trade taxes are adding to what you pay. The goal is simple: give shoppers transparency about tariff costs so they understand how trade policies are affecting their wallets.

The rule applies to tariffs that the President has imposed on an emergency or discretionary basis starting from January 20, 2025 onward. So if the government suddenly puts a new tariff on imported goods, businesses would need to show you that extra cost. However, small businesses get a pass — they don't have to display this information. The requirement kicks in 30 days after the law passes, giving businesses time to adjust their pricing systems and labels.

If a business doesn't follow this rule, the Federal Trade Commission can treat it as deceptive advertising and enforce penalties. This means companies can't hide tariff costs in their regular prices without telling you — they have to be upfront about it. The practical effect is that you'd see tariff costs broken out separately on price tags, receipts, or product listings, making it easier to understand how much trade policy is actually costing you when you shop.
