# Understanding the Adverse Childhood Experiences Data Collection Bill

This bill directs the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to collect better information about adverse childhood experiences—basically, traumatic or stressful events that happen to kids. These include things like abuse, neglect, witnessing domestic violence, having a parent with a substance abuse problem or mental illness, or experiencing poverty and instability. The bill recognizes that more than half of Americans have gone through at least one of these experiences, and research shows they can have serious long-term effects on physical and mental health, including higher risks of heart disease, obesity, depression, and other major health problems.

The main goal is to gather more comprehensive data than we currently have. The CDC will work with states to collect information through existing health surveys, creating a long-term study that builds on previous research. Importantly, this new effort will focus on things the old studies missed—like making sure the research includes diverse groups of people across the country, measuring how intense and frequent these experiences are, and understanding how poverty, neighborhood conditions, and other social factors play a role. The bill also wants to identify what actually protects kids from these experiences or helps them recover.

To make this happen, the bill provides $10 million per year for six years (2022-2027) to fund the data collection and to help states and communities with the technical work involved. The bill also allows the CDC to provide grants to organizations that can help gather and report this information accurately. While this doesn't directly change anyone's life immediately, better data on childhood trauma could eventually lead to improved prevention programs and support services in communities, helping identify which interventions actually work best.

Improving Data Collection for Adverse Childhood Experiences Act This bill authorizes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to collect data, in cooperation with states, through relevant public health surveillance systems or surveys for a longitudinal study on the links between adverse childhood experiences and negative outcomes. In addition, the CDC may provide, directly or through grants or other agreements with public or nonprofit entities, technical assistance related to this data collection.
