These cells, now called "HeLa cells," turned out to be revolutionary—unlike normal human cells that die quickly, HeLa cells could reproduce indefinitely, making them invaluable for scientific research.

Over the past seven decades, Henrietta Lacks' cells have been used in countless medical breakthroughs. Researchers have used them to develop the polio vaccine, treatments for HIV/AIDS, cancer drugs, and medicines for diseases like hemophilia and Parkinson's. Scientists have published over 110,000 studies using her cells, and several Nobel Prize-winning discoveries relied on them. Yet for more than twenty years, Henrietta Lacks' family didn't know her cells were being used commercially or that they were generating significant profits for researchers and companies. The bill itself is straightforward: Congress will create a gold medal to recognize Henrietta Lacks' extraordinary contribution to science and patients' rights. The Treasury Department will design and strike the medal, and it will be displayed at the Smithsonian Institution. The government can also make and sell bronze copies of the medal to cover the costs of creating it.
