The MATCH Act would freeze all hiring at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), which is the federal agency responsible for protecting people from unfair or deceptive financial practices by banks, credit card companies, and other financial institutions. Under this bill, the CFPB couldn't bring on any new employees, create new job positions, or move existing employees to different roles or offices. Essentially, the agency would be locked at its current staffing level and unable to expand its workforce in any way.

This would significantly limit the CFPB's ability to take on new responsibilities or handle increased workload. If the agency needs to investigate more consumer complaints, crack down on predatory lending, or respond to emerging financial threats, it would have to do so with the same number of people it currently has. Over time, as employees retire or leave, the agency would actually get smaller without being able to replace them, potentially making it harder for the CFPB to protect consumers from financial fraud and abuse.
