# What the Chesapeake Bay Science, Education, and Ecosystem Enhancement Act Does

This bill strengthens and expands the federal government's efforts to protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay, one of the country's most important and troubled waterways. It does this by upgrading the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Chesapeake Bay Office—the federal agency responsible for monitoring and managing the bay—and giving it more money, clearer responsibilities, and new programs to tackle specific problems.

The bill creates three main new initiatives. First, it establishes an integrated monitoring system that uses buoys, sensors, and other technology to collect real-time data about water quality, weather, and marine life conditions throughout the bay. This information helps scientists and policymakers understand what's happening in the water and make better decisions about protecting fish, crabs, oysters, and other living resources. Second, the bill creates an education and training program focused on teaching students and teachers about the bay's ecosystem and creating career opportunities in bay restoration work. Chesapeake Bay Science, Education, and Ecosystem Enhancement Act of 2021 This bill reauthorizes through FY2025 the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Chesapeake Bay Office and revises requirements concerning the office and its activities. It also authorizes the office to establish a Chesapeake Bay watershed education and training program as well as a program to support coordinated management, protection, characterization, and restoration of priority habitats and living resources.
