Additionally, states and the federal Bureau of Prisons must report annually on workplace safety conditions, injuries, and deaths involving incarcerated firefighters, creating accountability and transparency about these dangerous jobs.

To help states implement these protections, the bill provides $100 million in grants over six years for states to update their safety laws and enforcement systems. It also sets aside $400,000 annually to help states establish safety programs specifically for incarcerated firefighters. Beyond workplace protections, the bill creates a separate grant program to help formerly incarcerated firefighters transition back into society through job training, job placement services, and mentoring. This recognizes that people who've done this dangerous work deserve real career opportunities after release.

Finally, the bill allows previously incarcerated firefighters to have their criminal records expunged—essentially erased from their record—after they successfully complete their court-ordered probation. This removes a major barrier to employment and helps people rebuild their lives after incarceration.
