# Language Access in Transit Act

This bill requires the federal government to make sure that public transportation systems receiving federal money provide services in languages other than English for people who don't speak English fluently. Right now, there's no clear requirement that transit agencies do this consistently, so someone who primarily speaks Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, or another language might struggle to understand bus schedules, announcements, ticket information, or safety instructions.

The bill directs the Secretary of Transportation to actively enforce this requirement across all transit systems that get federal funding. This means transit agencies would need to provide things like translated signs, multilingual staff or interpreters, translated schedules and maps, and announcements in multiple languages. The goal is to make sure language barriers don't prevent people from using public transportation safely and effectively. For example, a person who speaks limited English would be able to understand how to buy a ticket, know which bus to take, and hear important safety announcements.

This affects millions of Americans who speak languages other than English at home, as well as transit agencies and the communities they serve. Transit systems in areas with large immigrant populations or diverse communities would likely see the biggest changes. While this creates new responsibilities and potential costs for transit agencies, it also ensures that public transportation—which many people depend on to get to work, school, and medical appointments—is actually accessible to everyone in the community, regardless of what language they speak.
