# Understanding the Helping Student Parents Succeed Act

This bill requires colleges and universities to clearly communicate their policies and available resources for pregnant students and student parents. Right now, many schools don't have consistent, easy-to-find information about what support they offer or what rights students have. This bill changes that by making schools put specific information on their websites and make it readily available to students.

The bill requires colleges to publish their official policies on pregnancy-related leave and parental leave, including how much time students can take off and how they can make up missed work. Schools must also provide detailed information about lactation accommodations, how to request academic accommodations for pregnancy-related medical conditions, and what support is available for students with parenting responsibilities. This means if you're pregnant or a parent in college, you'll know upfront what your school offers instead of having to hunt for answers.

Beyond leave policies, schools must explain how financial aid works for student parents. This includes information about dependent care allowances (extra money added to your financial aid if you have a child), how to change your financial aid status after having a baby, emergency financial aid programs, and how taking time off affects your eligibility for aid. Schools also have to list all available support services—like childcare assistance, housing help, food programs, mental health services, and transportation benefits—both on campus and in the community.

Finally, the bill requires schools to provide information about legal protections for pregnant and parenting students under federal and state law, explain how to file complaints if you face discrimination, and list contact information for key staff members who can help. The goal is straightforward: make sure student parents and pregnant students have clear, accessible information about their rights and the support available to them, all in one place.
