# What the Metropolitan Statistical Area Preservation Act Does

This bill changes how the federal government defines what counts as a metropolitan area. Right now, the Census Bureau uses a minimum population threshold to decide whether a region qualifies as a "metropolitan statistical area"—basically, a city and its surrounding suburbs counted as one economic region. This bill says that minimum population can't be higher than 50,000 people for the urban core of a metropolitan area.

Why does this matter? Metropolitan statistical area designations affect real money and real opportunities. When an area gets this official designation, it becomes eligible for federal funding, grants, and programs that are reserved specifically for metropolitan regions. Smaller cities and towns that currently fall just below the threshold could potentially qualify for these resources if the rules change. Metropolitan Statistical Area Preservation Act This bill prohibits the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) from establishing, for purposes of designating areas as metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs), a minimum population for the urban area of such MSA that is more than 50,000. The OMB may, for statistical purposes only, establish other statistical area designations with higher minimum population requirements for such urban areas.
