# Energy Transitions Initiative Authorization Act of 2025

This bill creates a new federal grant program to help remote areas, island communities, and Native American tribes build their own reliable energy systems. The Department of Energy would distribute money to these communities so they can develop renewable energy projects like solar panels, wind turbines, hydropower systems, and the infrastructure needed to store and distribute that power.

The bill recognizes that these communities face unique challenges. They're isolated from the main power grid, which means they pay much higher electricity costs and are more vulnerable when storms or disasters knock out power lines. Because they're small and spread out, it's hard for them to afford the expensive equipment and expertise needed to build modern energy systems on their own. The bill aims to fix this by offering grants of up to $5 million per project, with the federal government covering up to 90 percent of the costs. Communities would need to contribute at least 10 percent of the funding themselves.

Beyond just money, the bill also promises technical help. Communities that receive grants can request assistance from the Department of Energy for one to two years as they build and set up their energy systems. The bill sets aside $31 million per year from 2026 through 2030 to fund these grants. Additionally, the Government Accountability Office would audit the program annually to make sure the money is being spent properly and to suggest ways to make it work better. This program could help places like rural Alaska, Hawaiian islands, and tribal reservations reduce their dependence on expensive diesel generators and become more self-sufficient with clean energy.
