# What the STRONG Act Does

This bill makes it easier for small businesses to borrow larger amounts of money from the federal government. Right now, the Small Business Administration (SBA) has limits on how much it will guarantee in loans to help small business owners get financing. This bill roughly doubles those limits, which means more money is available for business owners who need it.

Specifically, the bill increases the maximum loan amount for what's called a "7(a) loan" from $3.75 million to $7.5 million. It also increases the maximum for "development company loans" from $5 million to $10 million. These are two different types of SBA-backed loans that help small businesses pay for things like equipment, real estate, or working capital. The gross loan amounts (the total before the SBA's guarantee) would also double, going from $5 million to $10 million for regular 7(a) loans, and from $5.5 million to $10 million for development company loans.

Who does this help? Small business owners who need significant financing but have struggled to qualify for traditional bank loans. A restaurant owner wanting to open multiple locations, a manufacturing company buying new equipment, or a contractor expanding their operations could all potentially access more money through these programs. Banks are more willing to lend when the government guarantees they'll get paid back if the business fails, so higher limits mean more opportunities for growth.

The practical effect is that small businesses in your community might find it easier to expand, hire more workers, or invest in their operations. However, this only helps businesses that qualify for SBA loans in the first place, so it won't affect every small business owner equally.
