# Understanding the ATF DATA Act

The ATF DATA Act requires the federal government to publicly release detailed information about where crime guns come from and how they end up being used in crimes. Right now, much of this data is kept confidential, but this bill would make it available to Congress and the general public through online reports that get updated every year.

Here's what would actually be published: The government would track which gun dealers are selling firearms that later show up in crimes, how quickly guns move from legal sales to criminal use, and which states are sources of guns recovered in high-crime cities. The reports would identify the top 200 gun dealers whose firearms are most frequently traced to crimes, showing how many guns each sold, what types they were, and how fast those guns ended up being used in crimes. For cities with the highest murder rates, the data would reveal which states and dealers originally sold the guns recovered there. The reports would also track guns that were reported stolen or lost by dealers, guns made privately without serial numbers, and patterns in how guns are trafficked across state lines.

The practical effect is transparency. Researchers, journalists, law enforcement, and the public would be able to see which dealers have patterns of selling guns that quickly end up in crimes, potentially identifying problematic sales practices or inadequate security. This information could help communities understand whether guns used in local crimes are coming from nearby dealers or being trafficked in from other states. However, the bill doesn't actually restrict gun sales or impose new penalties—it simply requires the government to share data that law enforcement already collects when they trace crime guns back to their origins.
