# The WEAR IT Act: What It Means for Your Health Gadgets

This bill allows you to use special health savings accounts to buy wearable health devices like smartwatches and fitness trackers that monitor your health. Right now, these devices aren't officially recognized as eligible medical expenses, so you can't use pre-tax health money to purchase them. The WEAR IT Act changes that by letting you spend up to $375 per year from your health savings account, Archer Medical Savings Account, flexible spending arrangement, or health reimbursement arrangement on qualifying wearable devices.

The bill defines a qualifying wearable device as something you wear on your body (or software connected to something you wear) that either collects and analyzes health data to help diagnose or treat a disease, or assists in providing a diagnosis or treatment for a health condition. This could include smartwatches that track heart rate and detect irregular rhythms, fitness bands that monitor blood oxygen levels, continuous glucose monitors for diabetics, or similar health-tracking technology. The $375 annual limit applies to the device itself and any subscription fees needed to use it.

The practical benefit is straightforward: if you have one of these health savings accounts through your employer or buy one independently, you can now use that pre-tax money to purchase health-tracking devices instead of paying for them with after-tax dollars. This makes these devices more affordable since you're essentially getting a tax break on the purchase. The changes take effect starting January 1, 2026, so they'll apply to any wearable devices you buy after that date.
