# What This Bill Actually Does

This bill creates a new government office dedicated to making sure schools follow Title IX, the federal law that requires gender equality in education. Right now, schools are supposed to provide equal opportunities for boys and girls in sports, academics, career training, and protection from harassment—but many schools aren't doing this well. The bill aims to fix that by setting up an Office for Gender Equity in the Department of Education with a director who reports directly to the Secretary of Education.

The office will do several practical things to help schools get gender equity right. It will train and support Title IX coordinators (the people at schools responsible for handling gender discrimination complaints) and other staff members who work on these issues. It will give grants to schools and universities to run programs that reduce sex discrimination. It will also create a website with best practices and information to help schools understand what they need to do. The bill recognizes that there's a major shortage of Title IX coordinators—schools need about 100,000 but only have around 23,000—so the office will help fill that gap by providing resources and support.

The bill addresses real problems that exist in schools today. Girls get far fewer athletic opportunities than boys, even though they want to play sports in greater numbers. Women are underrepresented in high-paying fields like engineering and construction. LGBTQ students, students of color, and pregnant students face harassment and discrimination. The bill also acknowledges that many people have unconscious biases that affect how they treat students, so it emphasizes training to help educators recognize and overcome these biases. Essentially, this bill puts money and infrastructure behind making Title IX actually work in practice, rather than just existing on paper.
