# Religious Exemptions for Social Security and Healthcare Taxes Act

This bill would allow certain people to opt out of paying Social Security and Medicare taxes based on religious beliefs. Specifically, it would let individuals who are part of recognized religious groups that don't believe in accepting government benefits claim an exemption from these payroll taxes. In exchange for not paying these taxes, they would also give up their eligibility to receive Social Security retirement benefits, disability benefits, and Medicare coverage.

The bill essentially creates a formal system for what some religious communities have already been doing informally. Groups like certain Amish and Mennonite communities have historically sought exemptions from these programs because their faith teaches self-reliance and mutual aid within their community rather than reliance on government programs. Currently, these exemptions exist but operate under different rules. This bill would standardize and expand how those exemptions work.

For most workers, this wouldn't change anything—they'd continue paying Social Security and Medicare taxes as usual and remain eligible for those benefits. However, for members of qualifying religious groups, this could mean keeping more of their paycheck now but accepting that they won't receive Social Security checks in retirement or have Medicare coverage when they turn 65. They would need to rely entirely on their religious community's support system or private insurance instead. The bill would require people to make this choice knowingly and formally, likely through a certification process, so they understand they're trading current tax payments for future government benefits.
