When someone gets diagnosed with cancer, they're suddenly facing a lot of decisions about treatment options, and they often don't have a clear roadmap for what comes next. This bill aims to fix that problem by requiring Medicare to pay for doctors to create written cancer care plans for their patients.

Here's what the bill actually does: It requires Medicare to cover the cost of doctors, nurse practitioners, or physician assistants sitting down with cancer patients to develop a detailed treatment plan. This plan would include an honest assessment of the patient's diagnosis, their health status, what treatment options exist, and what side effects or pain management they might need. Importantly, the plan has to involve "shared decision-making," which means the doctor and patient actually talk through all the available options together rather than the doctor just telling the patient what to do. The plan must be given to the patient in writing, in their own language if needed, as soon as possible after diagnosis. If the patient's condition changes significantly or they want to try a different approach, the plan gets updated.

The bill also covers something called "survivorship care plans" for people who've finished their main cancer treatment. These plans help patients understand what they've been through, what to watch for going forward, and how to manage any lasting side effects. Medicare would pay for these plans to be created and updated as needed. The bill sets the payment rate for these planning services at the same level as what Medicare already pays for similar coordination services, so it shouldn't create huge new costs. This mainly affects Medicare patients over 65, who make up more than half of all new cancer diagnoses in America.
