# Don't Sell My DNA Act

This bill prevents companies from selling your genetic information without your permission and without paying you for it. Right now, DNA testing companies can collect your genetic data when you use their services, and many of them sell or share that information with other companies, researchers, or third parties—often without clearly telling you or compensating you. This bill would make that practice illegal.

Here's what changes: If a company wants to sell your DNA data or genetic information to anyone else, they would first need to get your explicit written consent. You'd have to actively agree to it, not just accept it as part of buried terms and conditions. More importantly, if they do sell your data, you'd have the right to receive a share of the money they make from that sale. This applies to genetic testing companies, ancestry services, health providers, and any other business that collects your DNA information.

The bill also gives you the right to know what's happening with your genetic data. Companies would have to tell you clearly what information they're collecting, who they're sharing it with, and how they're using it. If you change your mind, you can ask them to delete your genetic information. Violations of these rules could result in significant fines for companies, giving them a real incentive to follow the law.

In practical terms, this means if you take a DNA test or provide genetic information to any company, that company can't quietly sell your data to pharmaceutical companies, research firms, or data brokers without your knowledge and without cutting you in on the profits. It's essentially treating your genetic information like your own personal property that belongs to you, not something a company can profit from without your say-so.
