# Weather Radar Coverage Improvement Act

The United States has a network of weather radars called NEXRAD that help meteorologists detect storms, predict severe weather, and issue warnings to keep people safe. These radars have been around for decades and are starting to show their age. This bill directs the National Weather Service to develop a plan to replace this aging radar system with newer, more advanced technology by 2040.

The bill asks the government to create a detailed roadmap for upgrading to next-generation phased array radars, which are a more modern type of radar technology. Before making the full switch, the government will build and test prototype radars to figure out exactly what specifications and capabilities the new system should have. They'll also get input from meteorologists, emergency managers, and public safety officials to make sure the new system actually meets the needs of people who rely on weather forecasts to protect communities. In the meantime, while waiting for the full replacement to be completed, the bill allows the National Weather Service to contract with private companies to fill gaps in radar coverage using different types of radars and weather technology. This is important because some areas—particularly mountainous regions where terrain blocks radar signals—don't get good coverage from the current system. The government can also use weather camera systems and other technologies to supplement the existing radars. This approach means people in areas with poor radar coverage could get better storm warnings sooner, potentially giving them more time to take shelter during severe weather.

Weather Radar Coverage Improvement ActThis bill requires the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to develop a plan to replace the Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) system of the National Weather Service by September 30, 2040.
