This bill makes it a serious federal crime for anyone to pretend to be an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer. Specifically, it becomes illegal for non-government people to wear, display, or carry ICE badges, uniforms, or anything with "ICE" or "Immigration and Customs Enforcement" written on it in a way that makes it look like they're a federal law enforcement officer. If someone gets caught doing this, they can face up to seven years in prison and fines. The bill also cracks down on the business side of the problem—anyone manufacturing, selling, or distributing ICE-branded apparel or insignia without official government permission can be hit with civil penalties of up to $100,000 per violation.

The bill addresses a real problem that communities have been experiencing: scammers and criminals impersonating ICE agents to intimidate people, commit fraud, or extort money. By making the penalties much harsher and going after people who sell fake ICE gear, the law aims to make this kind of impersonation riskier and less profitable. Any counterfeit ICE items can be seized and taken away by authorities. Additionally, if someone commits other crimes while impersonating an immigration official, their prison sentence gets automatically increased by at least six months.

To help prevent these scams, the bill requires the Department of Homeland Security to launch a public awareness campaign explaining the dangers of ICE impersonation and teaching people how to spot fakes. They also have to set up a hotline and online reporting system so people can report suspected impersonators. The government will study the problem every six months and report back to Congress about what's driving these impersonations and what else might help solve it.
