# What the DHS Transnational Criminal Investigative Units Act Does

This bill creates a new specialized unit within the Department of Homeland Security focused on fighting international criminal organizations that operate across borders. Right now, various government agencies investigate these kinds of crimes, but they don't always coordinate their efforts effectively. This bill establishes a dedicated program called the Homeland Security Investigations Transnational Criminal Investigative Unit Program (TCIU Program) to bring these investigations together under one roof and make them more organized.

The main job of this new unit would be to coordinate investigations into criminal organizations that operate internationally—think drug cartels, human trafficking rings, or organized crime groups that move between countries. The unit would also work with trusted law enforcement partners in other countries to share information, identify criminals, collect evidence, and help prosecute these organizations both in the United States and abroad. By having better cooperation between American investigators and foreign police forces, the idea is that these criminal networks will be harder to operate and easier to take down.

For most everyday Americans, this bill wouldn't directly change anything in their daily lives. However, it could indirectly benefit people by potentially making communities safer through more effective prosecution of international criminal organizations. The bill sets aside $6 million for fiscal years 2022 and 2023 to get this program up and running, which comes from the federal budget. The program would be led by an Assistant Director appointed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, placing it within that existing agency rather than creating an entirely new bureaucracy.

DHS Transnational Criminal Investigative Units Act This bill provides statutory authority for the Homeland Security Investigations Transnational Criminal Investigative Unit Program within the Department of Homeland Security. The program coordinates homeland security investigations into transnational criminal organizations and cooperates with foreign law enforcement partners to facilitate the prosecution of transnational criminal organizations.
