# Fair Legal Access Grants Act

This bill creates a federal grant program to help people get legal help when they want to file for extreme risk protection orders. An extreme risk protection order is a court order that temporarily removes guns from someone or prevents them from buying guns when there's concern they might hurt themselves or others. Right now, many people who want to file for these orders struggle to navigate the legal process on their own, especially if they can't afford a lawyer.

The bill gives the federal government $50 million per year (from 2025 through 2031) to distribute to states, local governments, and tribal governments so they can provide legal assistance to people seeking these orders. States and local communities can use this money in several practical ways: they can hire lawyers to represent people filing for these orders, set up information centers that explain the process in multiple languages, train police officers and prosecutors on how these orders work, or give grants to nonprofit legal aid organizations. The bill specifically emphasizes making sure people who don't speak English can get help through translation and interpretation services.

The bill also includes a protection against frivolous lawsuits. It says that federal courts cannot hear cases from someone who filed for an extreme risk protection order unless that person filed a false or harassing petition on purpose. This prevents people from being sued in federal court just for going through the normal legal process of trying to get a protection order.

In practical terms, this bill aims to make it easier for ordinary people—whether they're family members worried about a loved one or people concerned about their own safety—to access the court system and get legal help when they believe someone shouldn't have access to firearms due to safety concerns.
