# What the Greater Yellowstone Recreation Enhancement And Tourism Act Does

This bill protects five river segments in Montana around the Greater Yellowstone area by giving them special federal protection under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. The protected segments include about 42 miles of the Madison River, 39.5 miles of the Gallatin River, and smaller sections of Hyalite Creek, Cabin Creek, and Middle Fork of Cabin Creek. Once designated, these rivers would be managed to preserve their natural character, scenic beauty, and recreational value for fishing, hunting, camping, paddling, and wildlife watching.

The bill is designed to balance environmental protection with practical concerns. It specifically protects only the public land portions of these rivers, meaning private landowners can't be forced to sell their property. The bill also explicitly allows existing infrastructure like dams, roads, and bridges to be maintained and repaired. Two major hydroelectric dams on the Madison River—the Hebgen and Madison Dams—are completely excluded from the protected areas and can continue operating exactly as they do now. Water rights for agriculture, Native American tribes, and other existing uses remain unchanged and protected.

For everyday people, this means these rivers would receive stronger legal protection against future development while recreation opportunities like fishing and hiking would be preserved. The bill emphasizes that it won't interfere with Montana's agricultural water needs or existing power generation.
